White Sox open four-game series with Blue Jays
After enjoying an off day, the White Sox (19-22) open a four-game series against the Blue Jays on Thursday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman (1-6, 3.12 ERA) is the scheduled starter against Sox righty Dylan Covey (0-2, 5.91).
The Sox are coming off a 9-0 loss Tuesday to the Indians. In that one, left-hander Manny Banuelos left the game with a shoulder strain.
“I told the guys, ‘Listen, we’ve been battling, we’ve been fighting,’ ‘‘ manager Rick Renteria said after the game. “Today was a tough one, but put it behind us. Go enjoy the evening, enjoy your off day. We’ve been grinding, nothing to put your head down, and be ready to go when we come back on Thursday.’’
Renteria gave Yoan Moncada his first day off Tuesday and said other players, including shortstop Tim Anderson, were experiencing soreness after playing 19 games in 19 days, including a series on an artificial surface in Toronto over the weekend.
“Timmy’a a little ginger but he should be fine,’’ Renteria said. “They’re all barking a little bit but that goes with playing so many games in a row and the last cherry on top is playing on turf. It beats you up a little bit.”
Banuelos will likely go on the injured list today. The Sox, who lack pitching depth at Class AAA Charlotte, need to find a starter to replace him when they open a seven-game trip Monday in Houston. They could bring up a pitcher for the bullpen for the Jays series before naming a starter to replace Banuelos.
Here are the pitching matchups for the rest of the series:
Friday: Aaron Sanchez (1-6, 3.12) vs. Ivan Nova (2-3, 6.29), 7:10, NBCSCH, 720-AM
Saturday: TBA vs. Lucas Giolito (4-1, 3.55), 1:10, NBCSCH, 720-AM
