In what was sure to be one of the most celebrated double-bills of the Summer, Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington brought their talents to Chicago’s Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island this past Saturday. Each brought their full bands and performed two distinct sets before a very delighted crowd.

Chicago-born Herbie Hancock has had “illustrious career spanning five decades and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for ‘River: The Joni Letters,’ according to their official site. Known for being a child piano prodigy, Hancock performed a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orechestra at the age of 11.

Kamasi Washington, who also headlined the concert, is a multi-instrumentalist and producer. “His debut album, The Epic, was released in 2015 to rapturous critical reception, embraced as one of the best of the year and awarded the inaugural American Music Prize,” the site stated. “Heaven and Earth follows The Epic as well as Washington’s 2017 EP Harmony of Difference, an exploration of the musical concept of counterpoint that debuted as an original work for the 2017 Whitney Museum of Art Biennial.”
