Oak Lawn Village Manager Charged in Deadly October Hit-And-Run

The village manager of south suburban Oak Lawn turned himself in Friday morning on charges stemming from a deadly October hit-and-run in nearby Chicago Ridge.

Village Manager Larry Deetjen was driving a village vehicle on the night of Thursday, Oct. 10, when he hit a pedestrian in the 10100 block of Harlem Avenue, police said.

The victim, a 48-year-old man, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he died. 

Deetjen allegedly fled the scene, and was later found in the 5100 block of West 96th Street. He was arrested in the days following the collision, but was released and placed on paid leave by the Oak Lawn village board.

Deetjen was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to give information and render aid resulting in injury or death to any person, or damage to any vehicle, failure to give information after striking a person or property, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to exercise due caution. 

He posted bond on Friday, and was given a court date of Dec. 10.
