Indiana lawmakers are considering a bill that would undo a landmark Indiana Supreme Court ruling that affirmed that the shoreline of Lake Michigan is unquestionably owned by the state and held in trust for use by all residents. The legislation, sponsored by state Rep. Doug Miller, would give up the state’s ownership of large swaths of Indiana’s lake shoreline to adjacent private property owners if the property description in their deeds indicates the land extends to Lake Michigan. Snow, sleet and freezing rain all descended upon Chicago Saturday as part of a major winter storm that created hazardous road conditions and resulted in more than 1,200 canceled flights at Chicago airports. While the city of Chicago saw sleet, freezing rain and even flooding during the daytime hours, snow was steadily falling by late evening and expected to last five to six hours. New videos released Wednesday shows the chilling moments leading up to the murder of 19-year-old UIC student Ruth George. The videos, released by police at the University of Illinois-Chicago, shows the chain of events that ultimately led to George’s death inside of a campus parking garage on the morning of Nov. 23. According to authorities, George was sexually assaulted and strangled to death inside of her vehicle in the garage, and using the surveillance footage, police arrested Donald Thurman and charged him in George’s death. Man Charged in November Murder of Nurse in Little Village

A 19-year-old man is being charged in connection with the shooting death of 32-year-old Frank Aguilar in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood. According to Chicago police, Armando Lopez was charged by detectives in connection to the murder on Wednesday, and will make his first court appearance Thursday morning.  Just before 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 12, Aguilar was walking in the 3700 block of West 32nd Street when someone in a gray SUV opened fire, striking him in the chest. Cook County Moves To Vacate Pot Cases

In a historic hearing Wednesday, in a building more accustomed to accusations than exonerations, State’s Attorney Kim Foxx began the process of purging what are expected to be hundreds of thousands of low-level cannabis cases statewide. “I am formally moving to vacate these convictions,” Foxx said. “As Cook County’s chief prosecutor, I feel we must own our role in the harm these convictions caused.” The exoneration effort lies at the heart of Illinois cannabis legalization, which is to take effect on Jan. 1. After six years of empty promises and an empty building, residents in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood are rejoicing on Wednesday as a new Local Market location opened in their area.   The new Local Market location opened Wednesday in a space that was formerly occupied by Dominick’s near the intersection of 71st and Jeffrey. Officials Investigate Stolen Mail in Schaumburg, Chicago Heights

Residents in Schaumburg say the checks they are dropping off at a post box are allegedly ending up in the hands of criminals. Last month local Chris Slowinksi said she put about 30 checks in a box on Schaumburg Road, paying bills for the excavation company she works for. Among the 25 selected are Patricia Cardoso’s 2002 “Real Women Have Curves,” Gunvor Nelson’s 1969 “My Name is Oona” and the 1971 “A New Leaf,” which Elaine May wrote, directed and starred in. Officials Warn to Check Christmas Trees for Praying Mantis Eggs

Do you have a Christmas tree in your home? You might want to check it. Officials in Erie County, Ohio are warning of walnut-sized and shaped masses in trees. Police Respond to Car in Water Off Lake Shore Drive

A vehicle ended up in the water off of Lake Shore Drive in Chicago’s Gold Coast early Wednesday. Chicago police said authorities were called to the 900 block of North Lake Shore Drive at around 7:14 a.m. for a car in the water of Lake Michigan. There were no reports of injuries, officials said. Victims in Deadly Orland Park Hit-and-Run Were Teachers Leaving Staff Christmas Party

The two women struck by a car in an Orland Park parking lot Wednesday night, leaving one dead and the other injured, were teachers leaving their staff Christmas party at the time they were hit, the school’s principal said. At around 8 p.m., the two women were walking out of the Square Celt Restaurant, located at 39 Orland Square Drive at the Orland Park Mall, when they were hit by a vehicle that fled the scene, according to a statement from Orland Park police. Students gathered at the University of Illinois-Chicago on Monday after it was announced that the man accused of killing a 19-year-old student had confessed to her brutal slaying. Ruth George was reported missing by her family over the weekend. Her body was later found inside of a campus parking garage, and 26-year-old Donald Thurman is facing first-degree murder charges in her death. It was a day like any other for Nick Kamenjarin when he dropped off his dog Pharaoh at a dog daycare center, but when he returned, his dog was unresponsive and he was left with a lot of unanswered questions. A high school musician who was interning at a Chicago music school when he became the innocent victim of a gun battle between police and a bank robbery suspect may never regain full use of his arm, his family said Monday.  The parents of 15-year-old Rylan Wilder filed a lawsuit Monday against the surviving suspect in a Des Plaines bank robbery that sparked a police chase into Chicago and ended in a fatal gun battle between officers and a second suspect.  Wilder is believed to have been wounded by gunfire from a Des Plaines officer’s weapon, but his family’s lawsuit ... 15-Year-Old Girl Shot to Death in Aurora Sunday

Police are continuing to investigate after a teen girl was shot to death Sunday morning in suburban Aurora. According to authorities, the girl, identified as 15-year-old Jasmine Noble, was shot to death early Sunday morning in the 400 block of Florida Avenue. Just after 12:20 a.m., a 911 call placed to Aurora police reported a girl shot inside of a home. Paramedics rushed to the scene, where they pronounced Noble dead, according to a press release. Woman Fatally Shot After Altercation In Hammond Parking Lot

Hammond Police said a woman was found shot to death in a parking lot in Hammond, Indiana Sunday morning.  Authorities responded to the Coach’s Corner bar at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.  When police arrived, they found the victim, identified as 26-year-old Katelyn Golden of Hammond, Indiana dead at the scene.   Witnesses told police that the victim was shot after an argument with a man in a parking lot.   Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has identified a female University of Illinois at Chicago student whose body was found inside a car at a parking garage on Saturday after her family reported her missing. The medical examiner identified the victim as Ruth George, 19, of suburban Berwyn. At about 11:15 a.m., UIC police found George unresponsive in a car parked in the Halsted Street Parking Garage, 760 W. Taylor St., according to a public safety advisory from UIC. The alleged getaweay driver in a suburban bank robbery that sparked a dramatic chase that ended in a deadly police shootout in Chicago now faces federal charges, authorities said Friday. The search for a missing Indiana woman has ended in tragedy, as her body was found in Gary on Thursday. The family of 27-year-old Adriana Saucedo says that her body was found on Thursday night after she had been reported missing earlier in the week.
